Up Date Of Work On New Office Site

For the last few weeks, a number of members of the Tangerine Team have been preparing the site at Waldersea to place their new office.

Photo 1 shows the first shovel of cement being laid in the first foundation casing.

As you can see from the additional pictures, work has been remarkable to say the least in getting the place looking smarter than it has done for years. it would be nice to see a few more volunteers helping with this project, as the quicker we get it done, so the quicker we can get trains rightly running again.

Coldham Crossing & Revd Wilbert Awdry

Coldham Crossing

Following some recent complaints about the poor condition of the level crossing at Coldham, with one motorist claiming to have broken a spring on his car through it, two members of the Trust not only visited the site, but even went on to contact Network Rail direct, as they are still responsible for it, and within days, they had been out and carried out some good repairs, and cleaning it up.

While the Trust are not yet responsible for the upkeep of the crossings along the line, if anybody does see something wrong with any of them, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us, then we will look into it, then hopefully get something done as quickly as possible.

Saturday & Sunday 11th/12th June

On Saturday & Sunday 11th/12th June, a group of members were invited to attend The Old Vicarage at Emneth, and one time home to the late Revd. Wilbert Awdry, who brought us Thomas The Tank Engine. The reason for the visit, was for the Roadshow to attend, getting more new members. Every member there enjoyed themselves, including during the rain on Sunday, and would like to say a very heartfelt 'Thank you' to our hosts being Mr. Mark Thatcher, and his lovely wife Dr. Flo Thatcher, for the hospitality given to us.

Open Weekend For Late Revd Wilbur Awbry

A number of the 'The Tangerine Team' were out at Waldersea again on Saturday, getting some more of the groundwork sorted, ready for their office to be sited. A good amount was achieved by them before returning home, with two of them paying a visit to The Old Vicarage at Emneth, Near Wisbech and where the late Revd. Wilbur Awdry penned the last 13 of his books on Thomas The Tank Engine, and now home to Mark and Flo Thatcher.

Mark and Flo will be holding an 'Open Weekend' on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th June, to commemorate the birth of Revd. Awdry 100 years ago, and the unveiling of a Blue Plaque showing that Revd Awdry had actually lived there.

As well as this, the Bramley Line 'Roadshow' has been invited to attend, so why not give us a look while there?

Members of 'The Tangerine Team' were out at what they nicknamed 'Windy Waldersea' today, and what a difference they made to the area, despite the windy weather? Picture 1 shows the before work commenced, while 2 and 3 show the after affects.

This has been carried out in preparation for further improvements to the site, which we hope to complete before the summer weather finshes. If we had a few more volunteers helping, then we could get much more done, and much quicker.

Members of 'The Tangerine Team' were in action again today, and in the disposing of the mass of brambles that were cut down at Waldersea on Sunday, then the start of the office base was marked out in readiness for the necessary work to be carried out before it gets here in a matter of weeks time.

Fence Repairs

On Wednesday 11th May, after checking waldersea out, a couple of members of the Civil Engineers Department 'Tangerine Team' went along to Chain Bridge and effected some minor repairs to the fencing next to the crossing, as the attached photo's show, then went on to inspect more of the line towards Elm Road Crossing.

Waldersea progress

On Saturday 30th April, five members of the 'Tangerine Team' were at Waldersea and putting in place, both gates and fencing in order to improve the site appearance, as well as help to make the area a bit more secure. With the Red Disks from the Newbridge Lane crossing, re sited at Waldersea, they look quite smart. They were removed by two members of the 'Tangerine Team' the day before, so as to help prevent them being stolen,

At Waldersea on Wednesday 4th May members of the 'Tangerine Team' were in action again and clearing the area for the Proposed Office/Depot site for the Group. In less than 4 hours, quite a few of the brambles causing an obstruction had been successfully removed as per the photo.

Low Life Attack The Bramley Line Again

When Bramley Line volunteers turned up at Waldersea today (Wednesday) they discovered the theft of around 30 chairs and some fishplates from the track between Waldersea and Coldham. An inspection of the track between Waldersea and the A47 found a further 300 chairs and more fishplates missing. British Transport Police were informed. Although the rails were left behind this effectively severs the line in two places.

It is too early for the Bramley Line to make a statement but Trust members will be discussing the implications for the restoration of the line at the Annual General Meeting on 26 March.

If anyone has any knowledge of the thefts they should contact British Transport Police.

Civil Engineering Dept (Tangerine Team)

Waldersea Yard

Due to bad weather on Saturday 19th February, the 'Tangerine Team' of the Civil Engineers Department, were again in action at Waldersea, on Sunday 20th, and discovered a few sleepers covered by brambles. These were then retrieved ready for a siding that is planned for Waldersea. The name 'Tangerine Team' came from an idea suggested by one of the Essex members while taking a photo.

In a matter of some 5 hours, there sure was some difference in the clean-up that took place, with plenty of banter between us, and we all enjoyed the work. It would be nice to see more members helping, rather than waiting until the work is done, then coming along to enjoy the fruits of our labour, as the saying goes.

At Waldersea today, the minimum amount of members were determined to make some impact on the Real Bramley Line website, and Not that of the 'Friends' one that claims to be interested, yet No commitment whatsoever in to getting it reopened, other than some wierd dreams, as well as the number of Supposed visitors to their website.

The 'Friends' of the line, have yet to even obtain a License to access the track, let alone start clearing the vegetation

Picture 1 shows 2 of the members at the start of the days work, followed by 3 more showing the progress as they, as well as the photographer, went along, including one where two of the team were way ahead of the member taking the photographs, as he also cut down the vegetation between the running rails, then as far as they cut down, before finishing for the day, some hours later.

Track Clearing & Reccying

Waldersea Yard

Today, just a small team of the Civil Engineers Department were again clearing up the site at Waldersea for a few hours, where a fair amount of vegetation was cleared away, making the area look that much cleaner, instead of the eyesore it once got to be
This was finished before going on to check other areas of the line and while being towards the Wisbech end, steam could be seen rising above the track in the distance, but sadly no locomotive producing it. Perhaps if we had a few more volunteers to help, then we just Might get to see steam along this line once again, and sooner, rather than not at all?

On Sunday 16th January, the usual Civil Engineers Deparment team were again on track at Waldersea, doing further improvements to the lineside, in removing brambles roots then piling them up ready for disposal. Despite some strong winds cutting across the nearby fields, this didn't stop the team, while a brew break did for a short while. It's marvellous what can be achieved in just a matter of hours by just a few, but what could be done by double the regular amount?

It seems strange that members from Essex area can get there on a Sunday, while those more local have difficulty. So, come on you local members, come and join us, as this Is for the community we are doing this, and when we do get to run services, you'll be wanting to travel on the line.

The Civil Engineering Dept were out on Sunday 9th Jan and started work on clearing the Waldersea Yard for the coming year. The air was exhilerating, and the banter just as good as before. Those who bothered to come along, sure kept warm, and without a bonfire.

To say we were extremely disappointed in the turnout for work, despite it being on here, plus there is now a contact number, as just the usual team of people turned out, is putting it mildly. So, unless there are more volunteers willing to help with this work, the line might as well close, as a bad job.

On Saturday 11th December, some of the Fund-Raising Team Members had been very kindly invited to join in the 125th Celebrations of the opening of March Station, by taking along the Road show, in order to keep the public aware, that we are still intent on re-opening the line, despite rather little taking place during this year and for various reasons.

Members of the public were quite impressed with what advance has been made, with many taking a keen interest, as to our achievements so far, with so few members actually helping clear the vegetation. Even if just half of those who took membership application forms, complete and return them, the membership will receive a considerable boost, and one that it needs right now.

"It will never happen." is often heard, as it was just a few times at the celebrations, while those of the membership who were there, plus a few more, are determined it will happen, and just as soon as the required finance can be raised, in order to obtain the lease, but what we can't do, is raise it overnight, during the current financial situation, or with the shortage of volunteers, who are as Ardent as those on Saturday.

New Notice & Genral Inspection

On Wednesday 8th December, a small number of the Civil Engineers Department started work at Elm Road Crossing,by putting up a small Notice Board, so as passers-by,can see we are still active, even if not seen there.

from Elm Road crossing, they made their way towards Whitemoor Junction, where they were surprised to see considerable growth in the vegetation, since their last visit,plus some uncalled for Fly-tipping. This will be cleared again and hopefully in early 2011.

From Whitemoor end of the line, the members then made their way to Coldham, where a couple of notices were displayed about the celebrations taking place at March station, this weekend.

Just before setting off for home again, Ray decided he had to try stirring things up, but found it solid ice.

Before heading home, the members then went to Waldersea, to do their weekly check on the area, only to find it beautifully white as per photo.

Looking For Lost Members

While the regular Civil Engineering Department continued to cultivate what now looks like an allotment, a search team drove from Essex, to clear some long vegetation a bit further along the line, in hope of finding the members that disappeared some months ago, never to be seen again since.

There will be clearing again on Wednesday 24th November, but not on Sunday 28th November, due to other commitments by the Civil Engineering Department that attend weekly.

Moving Bed & Treasure Hunt

On Wednesday 17th November, one member of the Civil Engineers Department had been told by his wife, that: "Seeing as you are now spending so much time down the track, you may as well take your bed down there!" so he did and quite literally. Here he is carrying his mattress, but not saying where exactly he will be sleeping on it, or come to that, which team member it is. He has requested anonymity, so we respected his wishes, by not photographing his face.

Last week, some unusual finds were made down the track, so we invited others to join us, yet still awaiting some response, so while one member was working On the level (photo 2), some of the Bramley Line's own Time Team (photo 3), were searching for more hidden treasures, including those members who haven't been seen for some considerable time, and so wondered where they are hiding, as the remainder are getting a new track bed cleared, (photo 4,) by 'rooting out' the brambles that are in the way.

Clean up at Waldersea

On Wednesday the Civil Engineering Dept were out at Waldersea cleaning up after the successful bonfire night on Nov 5^Th 2010

As we were cleaning we came across new vegetation of the brambles, which for the time of the year, is most unusual. This is one of many unusual finds along the line when clearing takes place. How about coming along and not only help clear the mass of vegetation, but see if You can find something unusual?

Guy Fawkes Visits the Bramley Line

Remember, remember the 5th of November. Members, family and friends gathered at Waldersea for our Bonfire & Fireworks night. After a clear day, and building the bonfire up, the heavens opened and at 1915, the Bonfire was lit.

With the Bonfire lit and well alight, the assembled crowd gathered in the Shelter of the Bramley Line Gazebo and Simon and Derek went and arranged the fireworks.

The fireworks lasted 45 minutes and everyone who attened enjoyed the evening. Thanks to all members who helped get it ready, and everyone who attended. An Excellent night had by all.

Peterborough Model Railway

On Saturday and Sunday 16/17th October, some members of the Bramley Line committee, attended the National Model Railway Show at Peterborough, in order to continue to raise awareness of the project to hand. The committee were very pleased with the response to this and hope to attend again in 2011, as well as other Show's, whenever the opportunities arise.

It was on Wednesday 13th October, the Civil Engineers Department had a blitz on the undergrowth at Waldersea, even to spending a couple of extra hours more than normal, to clear the vast amount of vegetation they did, with two members having travelled from Essex to assist.

On Saturday, June 19th, it was a very early start for volunteers at our first ever model railway exhibition. Setting up the hall from 7am, the hall was open by 10am. We are grateful to everyone who visited and who participated in the show, and we everyone who visited enjoyed the mini show. Below are some photos from the event:-

Visitors where given a proper Edmondson ticket for entry and most people seemed to really enjoy the show, even though we sadly had a couple of exhibits who were unable to attend at the last minute.

Update : Waldersea's On Fire

Towards the end of May, the track gang moved on to Waldersea to do a spot of Maintainence. With weed season in full flow, the track at Waldersea, and its surroundings where starting to look a bit on the bushy side.

As can be seen above, the weeds are now itching over the track once again, and it was time for action. The team got to work and within a short while the track was looking clear again.

Work then moved on to look at Waldersea sidings which was being overun by weeds. Only a couple of weeks before hand, the same shot below would have been almost clear of weeds.

So the gang got to work....

They say there is no smoke without fire....

and you can see the group is starting to make good progress with the clearing of weeds here.

Update :- Track Gang at Coldham in Mid May

Over the last month, a number of things have been going on, in and around the track. In May, the opportunity was taken to do some light maintainence at Coldham Level Crossing. Following vandalism there, we have been showing a High Profile of going there. We decided the ground around the crossing was starting to look tatty, so went ahead clearing it. Below is a Before picture taken a couple of weeks before hand.

As you can see the grass goes over the site of the Down Road which was taken out years ago and the fencing. Now you can see the difference in these shots below:

As you can see, the grass has been cleared right back from the road to the crossing. You will also notice, the weeds are now starting to grow again, and the fence, which was only recently painted, is starting to be covered by weeds.

A much neater appearance to the recently repainted gates can be seen, the only thing missing now is the red target on the crossing gate. To help with the clearing, our resident Ray helped with the Roadsweeping.

After clearing the crossing, it was noticed that the securing bolts on Coldham Level Crossing had started to work loose. We decided to tighten the blots as we had to the tools necessary to do so with us. Below you can see the work in progress, everything that is good about the Bramley Line..... Teamwork.

Stange but true.... at Coldham

Recently, the Bramley Line has noted a number of vandalism acts being committed at Coldham. For Safety reasons, the access/egress gate at the crossing was locked up, as it was deemed that the track was becoming dangerous to those using it as a walkway.

As a result, someone obviously got very angry and damaged the Level Crossing gate. It was found damged by the team in early May. The damage can be clearly seen in the above photo.

Some repair work was carried out, to make to structure usable again. This gate was due to be repainted, but this has not happened as the time allocated for painting, was used up on repairing the gate. The wood which has been added as a short term measure can clearly be seen below.

We ask people to please be aware of vandalism problems that the line faces. Since the start of the year, there has been a number of vandalism issues at Coldham and Wisbech. If you see anyone on the track not wearing Orange Hi-Vis vests, please contact the British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40.

Coldham Track Clearing

Over the last few weeks, much work has been going on to clear some of the new weeds coming through next to Coldham Level Crossing. This is the track which has been cleared. While it is not a lot, some work has gone into doing this without using chemicals.

To allow us to clear properly, the gates where opened, and closed where road traffic came along.

A fair bit of grass had also built up infront of the Level Crossing.

So, Brian set about giving Blood Sweat and tears to work on the grass...

Then decided that the gates post needed holding up...

and then, the job was done...

After a bit of reflection, the team headed to Waldersea and noticed the road painters have been out...

The Mid Week team has been very sucessful in getting to know a number of parties around the railway line between Wisbech and March. On Wednesday, the Mid Week team was fortunate enough to be allowed to join a team of Network Rail staff who where training on Re-Sleepering between Coldham and Chain Bridge.

The sleepers Ballast is dug out and the sleeper is ready to be removed below:

The Sleeper, having been lifted out, the chairs remain suspended in mid air.

Now, with a new sleeper in place, the ballast is repacked and put back in place.

A lot was learnt from the day, and we are extremely grateful to the Network Rail staff who allowed us to accompany them. We return to working at Waldersea this Sunday from 9.30am. If you wish to get involved, please get in touch at bramley_line@yahoo.com

More Sunday work at Waldersea

On Sunday, April 11th, the team where back at Waldersea working on fencing again. The day started by finishing off the bits where we started last Sunday. Brian, still enjoying his retirement, is digging for treasure...

Treating us all to a view of his rear end, no doubt a gesture to his co workers who doubted his ability to find some treasure, Brian comes up with the goods....

Well, it wasn't a treasure box full of money for the Bramley Line!. But he did find two big posts to go in the holes to attach the new fencing too!

With the help of two new volunteers, new fencing was put built up and put in place.

At the end of the day, looking at Waldersea from a distance, all the new fencing and repainted gates really make it look like a looked after railway again. Now all thats missing is the Signal Box and a BR Green Heritage DMU instead of an Astra car......

More Fencing at Waldersea

Over the last few weeks, as you may be aware, there have been a number of changes within the group. The group continue to meet most Sundays and some mid week days. With the summer months approaching, we are hoping to get a lot of work done in the near future.

Work recently has concentrated at Waldersea, where we have continued to clean up the fencing in the area. Another extention was being build last Sunday and the photos are shown below.

This photo shows the poor wire fencing which is currently provided. First of all, the first hole was dug for the post and then the post was put in before the fencing panels nailed on. As you can see, our old chairman is enjoying an easy life in his retirement, holding the fence up.

By the end of the day, the fencing is taking shape and making its way towards Friday Bridge.

Our aims with the fencing is to make the railway two things. 1) More Presentable to the Public using the Level Crossings and 2) More Secure from Tresspassers. New volunteers always required...

All our volunteers come from different backgrounds in life and work, and come along for various different reasons. This is an exciting new project to establish a new Heritage Railway in the fens and to reconnect the towns of Wisbech, Coldham and March to the railway. We know we are not going to do this overnight, and we know there is a lot of work to be done. All our people are volunteers who bring different skills to different tasks.

Most "On Track" days are Sundays and now Wednesdays, but we also need volunteers to help with fundraising and with Roadshows at Exhibitions and Fairs.

Volunteers

On Sunday, March 14th, our volunteers spent the day working at Waldersea to clear some vegetation before some more fencing work goes into place. This was done in a change to what was planned, as Coldham was very busy on Sunday for the football, so it was decided to keep the painting of the gates for Mid Week days.

On Wednesday, March 17th, the group were working at March Elm Road crossing, to clear some things up there. Unfortuantly, we have no photos from these days, as the usual suspects with the cameras where not available.

We regret that the planned St George's day Quiz Night has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond the control of the group. Anyone who has sent an entry deposit will recive a full refund for this. We hope to have another Quiz Night soon.

Coldham Level Crossing gates

On Wednesday, March 10th the group where back out to carry on with the works to improve the look of the crossing at Coldham. In the weeks leading up to the Sponsored Walk, the group cleared a lot of vegetation around the crossing.

The day started by Sanding down the crossing gates. During this time we spoke to a number of local people. This is how the gate looked before the work started.

After the work today, which was only to the gate, March side, the gate now looks like this

This gate will probably need another coat before it is finished. It will then be given a Red Target again. Similar work will be carried out on the Wisbech side gate on Sunday, March 14th.

The Bramley Line is always looking for new members and volunteers to help us improve the railway line and work towards obtaining the lease of the line and returning Heritage Rail services to the Branch. There is much work needs to be done to do this, and the more volunteers we get, the quicker and better we can get the work done. Elm Road Revisited

On Wednesday, March 3rd, in preperation for this Sunday's Sponsored Walk, the mid week group visited March Elm Road, and tasked themselves with giving the fencing a coat of Gloss paint.

Now, on the right hand side you can see a shed. Someone was very curious as to what might be in that shed, so, as the Ivy was blocking the door, they decided to kick a hole in the wall!

All that to find an old chair, obviously, nothing of interest. So managed to locate 2 of the 3 panels, and fill the hole in. It would have been far eaiser just to move the Ivy, but nevermind.

Now, one of the team decided to paint the gradient marker white, and will paint in the letters in black later. The only photo I can find of it before, was back in July 2009 as shown below on the very left of the picture:

Now today, it is shown below after being painted.

It certainly makes it stand out a bit better.

This Sunday is the Sponsored Walk, so there will be no major work going on. We are hoping to raise as much money as possible, and if you have not already, please get in touch to sponsor us. We will be meeting at Weasenham Lane Level Crossing at 10am, aiming to set off at 10.30am.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR THOSE MEMBERS DOING THE WALK

Please note the railway is a dangerous place. To take part in the walk, you must be a paid member of the Bramley Line. Everyone doing the walk must wear Orange Hi-Vis Vests, in most cases, we can supply these. Please bring with you Bottled Water as you may need it.

Anyone who the organiser believes to be under the infulence of Alcohol or Drugs will be turned away and will not be able to do the walk.

It is very easy to trip up and there are many hazards. Please wear appropriate footwear. When walking, please do not walk on the sleepers as these are very slippery. Try to walk on the stone ballast. The line has been cleared of the majority of brambles, however, some do still remain.

Everyone doing the walk must stick together. There will be a break at Waldersea.

Weather Permitting, a Members BBQ will take place at Elm Road at the end of the walk.

Carry on Coldham

Sunday, Feb 21st brought the team back to Coldham in the snow, to finish where the mid week team had got to. The team cleared the track north of Coldham. Having finished that they set off up road towards March, and got lots clear. Again on Sunday Feb 28th, the team where working at Coldham to finish off where the left off.

From Coldham, you can now see Waldersea gates in the distance and make out the railway each side. A Warning - Do not Tresspass sign was also put up, after the gate was nailed shut at the side.

Our new Mid Week Team start at Coldham

Our new mid week group started today, meeting initially every 2nd Wednesday, plus maybe a few more in between. We started where our Sunday Team left off at Coldham. First up was to clear the level crossing gate the March side of brambles and grass and the fencing to the sides.

This is how the fence looked back in the Summer of 2009, the brambles a very unwelcome sight coming over the fencing, and through the gates. Very unkept and shows the railway up in a particuarly bad way.

As you can see it is very wet at Coldham, but the Brambles and trees have been delt with. Over the next few months, we will be looking to Refurbish this area, sanding down and repainting the fencing and gates, replacing the Red Targets on the gate and making it look like a Railway again. Much work is needed to be done here, but we hope to get it looking as good as Waldersea this year and smarten it up.

Having finished with the gate area for now, we moved onto the slog that was clearing a walkway through the Brambles north of the Level Crossing. This is how it looked when we started on Sunday

and after much cutting and hacking back the brambles between our team, it finished looking like this

Ok, so the grass in the four foot makes it look bad, but there has been a huge amount of Brambles cleared. We have only concentrated on the track area for the time being because we are clearing a path for the Sponsored Walk on Sunday, March 7th. We started at the crossing itself and where soon making good headway through the Brambles. Below our Chairman rakes some of the cut brambles away.

Not long after this, we needed a break. We got discussing the old gents toilet block which is still there, burried among trees and brambles south of Coldham station. So, we decided to pay a visit to it. Inside we found a cut down tree and some brambles which were dumped in there sometime ago. Nothing else.

Now, we found on the office computer this photo, taken back in 2005/6.

and also this photo of Coldham before Closure. The gents toilet block can clearly be seen on the left hand side of the photo.

Anyway, enough of this larking about in the gents toilets! People will talk. Onward and northward, we got back to work and as we got near the end the progress looked good. Shame about the orangemen.

The group is again working this Sunday at Coldham from 9.30am onwards. Work continues to complete the vegetation clearence work at Coldham. If you want to get involved, please get in touch. Brambles claim revenge on Valentines Day

This Sunday, the group moved south to Coldham, where work took place to clear the line South of Coldham level crossing to allow the Sponsored Walk to progress through. This is how the line looked when it started:

While you can still make out the track for most of the way, this poses a significant risk in walking along the line. So the group set out to clear the line. During this time, one of the team had an arguement with one of the brambles, which came up and hit him on the ear. However as the day progressed, the team got the better of the Brambles, and a significant improvement was made.

Above is a number of the team working towards the camera to clear the line, and below is the line after clearing. You can see it is much clearer and provides a much better condition for walking on.

At the end of the day, this is how the line looked from Coldham Station.

More work at Waldersea

Work this Sunday, and for the next three weeks, concentrates on preperations for the sponsored walk on Sunday, March 7th. First of all, in to the side of the line, an area has been cleared where there will be fresh water, and an area where the Half Way break will be. The photo of the cleared area is shown below.

Some work was also done to tidy up, and fill in the gap which existed between the end of the road surface and the new fencing work. This didn't take too long, but makes it much safer than it was.

Once that was done, and swept level and packed in place, the work moved on to clearing the track south of Waldersea Farm Crossing, so unlike those who walked the line on January 20th, the members doing the sponsored walk on Sunday, March 7th will be able to pass without having to fight the brambles. We did joke we should be called the Bramble Line, as there is a very high volume of brambles in this area. The photo below shows the line immediatley south of Waldersea Farm Crossing before we started.

Sponsored Walk through that then anyone? Didn't think so, and neither did we. So we started working our way towards Coldham around 11.30am as you can see from the photos below.

By the time we finished the area above, we were 31 wagons from Waldersea Level Crossing (We know this because of the sign) and it was 2.30pm. As you can see in the background , the bad weather was closing in, so we decided to call it a day there. In total there was about 1/2 mile cleared, but this is more or less all of what was needing done in the Waldersea area. A comparson is shown below;

Busy times at Waldersea

We are sorry for the lack of updates over the last couple of weeks, and photos. This is because the person who updates the site has been away. Over the last few weeks, volunteers turnout has been poor mainly because of the cold weather, but also some members visited the Great Central Railways winter steam gala.

Most of the work over the last few weeks has centred on making up and finishing the fencing work at Waldersea. All of the fencing is now down at the crossing. the photo below shows how it was over Christmas and New Year. All the fencing at both Waldersea and Elm Road will soon be given a white gloss, but this is likely to happen after the sponsored walk, when the better weather is here.

As you can see, standing from a distance, the overall look has now massively improved. The photo below shows the full extent of the new fencing at Waldersea. Once this has been glossed we think the whole area around Waldersea will look excellent. It is a shame we can't do something with the other gates, but we will look into this at a later date. The Waldersea depot sign has been resited and will soon be repainted and will look much better. We have also added "Refresh Notices" to say that the work has been carried out by volunteers of the Bramley Line.

Work this Sunday will take place again at Waldersea. The main object over the next few weeks will be working on Clearing work between Waldersea and Coldham, to clear a path through the Brambles on the line for our Sponsored Walk on Sunday March 7th.

Winter blues at Chain Bridge

Happy New Year to everyone, and we start 2010 at Chain Bridge. Work to erect some new fencing took place today. First the hole was dug for the post, then the post was hammered into the ground. It was packed with stones and then the hole filled in again.

The cross beams where then nailed to the posts, the individual spikes nailed to the beams.

This doesn't sound like a lot, but there is a good four - five hours work involved in this. Bitterly cold, and a job well done, the work was complete and we all set off around 1500.

Winter Wonderland

On Sunday, December 21st, plans for finishing off the fencing to the North of Waldersea crossing were put back because of the Snow. A number of members live in Rural areas or a few miles away, that prevented them from coming out. Therefore, the remaining fencing posts and panels where put away, ready for the new year, when the work resumes on January 3rd 2010.

On Sunday, January 3rd, work will be taking place at Waldersea to do the work put off since 21st December. The Bramley Line hopes all our supporters and visitors have had a very Happy Christmas, and we wish everyone a Good new year for 2010.

A Busy day at Waldersea

Well, we don't think Waldersea has ever seen so many cars or volunteers, with a count of 12 at one point, all in the same location, but not all doing the same work. We were very fortunate to welcome along two guests from the Heritage Railway Association today, who where given a tour of line, and spoke with us over the day about our project and we thank them for their time for coming along today.

A very bright morning started just after 9am when following the paint having now dried on the crossing gate, the replacement red target was placed on the painted gate. Once done, it's reflective target was then returned, making the gate look superb again.

As you can see this really sets the gate off as being a level crossing gate again. What you can't see is the new red target has been made from old wooden pallets, donated to the group by local farmers, which otherwise would have just been burned.

Having done this, there was the last of the fencing work to do, to join the new wooden fence from post to post. The last support fence post was dug and put in place, and the last fencing put in place.

Moving on from there, we are now erecting more fencing from the gates, all to make the crossing more pleasing to the eye, and the railway more secure. With the sun shining and the holes being dug, a good work mommentum was there all day, however at one point the heavens opened up and we could see clear blue sky each side of us.

We then took these photos of the approach and back to show you the difference between the before and after, and we hope you agree, it is much more pleasing an area to look at now.

Christmas tree magic at St Peter's Church, March.

The Bramley Line Christmas tree is now on show at St Peter's Church, March for their annual christmas event. The tree was decorated by two members of the Bramley Line. Information on the Bramley Line and leaflets are also with the tree.

Each year, the Church has a number of trees on display, decordated by local good causes and groups. Our thanks go to St Peter's Church and Gordon & Sue for the time and the work they have put in to making such a wonderful christmas display.

Waldersea Gate takes shape

Following the work being undertaken on the March side gate at Waldersea, due to poor weather, very little work was done on Sunday, December 6th, but we did take the rotten red target off the gate, and paint undercoat on the wood underneath. On Wednesday, December 9th, the gate was repainted with Gloss paint over the undercoat already used. We also repainted the black metal fittings, which we think will need to be redone again. This took the majority of the day. The gate is looking very good now compared with how it used to look.

Once this work was done, some time was taken to have a look at the Wisbech side gate to see if there was anything we felt we could do to repair the gate to make it look as good as the one on the March Side. It has been decided that the gate on the Wisbech side is beyond repair, and will need to be replaced. Unfortuantly, this will need to wait until the lease of the line is completed. Some photos of the gate are shown below to highlight why that decision has been taken.

This sunday we will be working again at Waldersea. The plans are to finish the fencing on the March side and put the new Red Target on the gate. We will then be looking at other Fencing at Waldersea. Members are welcome to join us from 10am onwards.

It's amazing what a quick lick of paint can do....

Waldersea seems to be a hub of activity for the Bramley Line at the present, with the new fencing going up, we decided it the gates where long over due a clean up too. Despite turning up, and it started to rain, we went off to Wisbech to get materials for the job. When we returned, the rain was gone, and so we got to work.

These two photos show the gate back in the Summer of 2009 from both sides before any work was undertaken there.

We first sanded and wire brushed the good gate on the March side of the crossing. The Bad gate on the Wisbech side is in a very poor state, and we think this may need to be completely replaced. To start with, we will be concentrating our efforts on the March side. Having wire brushed the gate, we started to paint the gate. We decided to paint White undercoat on the main gates woodwork. This took much longer than we first thought, completely wrecking two paint brushes on the wire fencing. We also painted wire brushed the rust off the metal work on the gate, and painted it black. As the light faded, we stood back and looked at the work.

The three photos above show the gates as the light was begining to fade. We will return next week to gloss the gates. Then the replacement Red Circle will be put on the outside.

Work on Sunday, December 6th, work will continue to finish the fencing at Waldersea, clear the vegetation the Wisbech side of the gate, and also continue work on the painting of the Gate on the March side.

Progress continues despite small team

Despite being low in numbers today through work commitments by a number of the civil engineers department, some fencing work was carried out by 3 available members. That was until the rains came and so heavy, they had no choice other than to stop.

The first picture shows the site being prepared for them being able to work safely, followed by the connection of a couple of panels to put in place soon after. After getting these panels up firmly, so the third picture shows how good it now looks. It was very soon after taking this photo, that the sky opened and the guys got under cover fast.

Forced to abort the job until two weeks time when they will return, the guys went to the office to do some work, but on their way home again, went via Waldersea again and to get a picture with the gate open and showing the work needed to smarten that up with a good clean and lick of paint.

Even with just 3 of the team out, the banter continued to shine through the rainy weather. This Sunday, 29th, we will be at Elm Road Crossing and retracing our steps towards Coldham, ensuring the weeds and trees are still under control.

The Calm after the Storm at Waldersea

The work planned for Sunday looked doubtful as a Storm battered the area on Saturday, however, nice and early, a group of volunteers made there way to Waldersea to do some work. We have felt the fencing on the approach to Waldersea Crossing on the road from Coldham is a bit bland, and the wire fencing is way past it's best.

Some work was carried out to remove vegetation from the area around the wire fencing, and bright and early, the work began. After digging the hold for the first post, the first bits of fencing were made up.

ole was then dug for the second post and the fencing moved into place. The fencing then moved into position and attached to the poles, while another volunteer packed the poles and filled the holes back in around the posts. The process then repeated, but a much larger hole was dug for the third post. The idea of this was to make the fence more secure.

In what seemed like a scene from Time Team, the different layers of the ground where evident. A lot of rocks, but also yellow stones, clay and chalk. The photo above shows the third post waiting to be secured in the hole, while the fencing is taking shape along the side of the line.

The photo above shows the point we are up to. We have about another days worth of work to do to finish along the end of the wire fencing. Some more photos from today are shown below.

Work then started to get a lot of the stuff growing on the crossing gates scraped off in preparation for repairing and painting them in the next few weeks.

The next working day at Waldersea is scheduled for Sunday, November 22nd from 10am onwards, when volunteers will be working to sand down the gates ready for painting.

Retracing our steps...

In line with the way we have been working, the track clearing team have been going over old ground, which has been cleared since September 2009 until now. Our first Sunday, November 1st, was a complete wash out, with some work being done, but because of the torrential rain, some of this work has been delayed, but this did allow us to do some work in the office, which has been getting put off to allow track work to continue.

Sunday, November 8th, saw a small group of volunteers working on the line at Waldersea, to finish off some of the work that had been done there a few weeks ago. A couple of photos are shown below.

Sunday Nov 15th, there will be two teams working.

Firstly 9am onwards at Coldham Level Crossing, tidying the general appearence of the crossing and starting the task of clearing the track from Coldham towards March.

Secondly 10am onwards at Waldersea Level Crossing, where some new fencing is being put in place.

Rewinding the clocks back....

It's official, Winter is here. The clocks went back on Sunday, and after an extra hour in bed, the team of volunteers made their way to Waldersea to do some overdue work. Upon arrival, volunteers had a look to see how the line was looking. Some clearing was required to get the work done.

Towards the end of the day, you can see the main parts of the track are now clear. This week, we hold our meeting in March, all members and anyone interested are welcome to come along. Sunday, the group will be meeting again, at Elm Road Crossing, March from 11am until 4pm.

The Road to Peterborough....

Show Report

It's hard to believe that we started the ball rolling so long ago with the Peterborough show!. Going back in time to May, we approached British Railway Modelling about exhibiting at the National Festival of Railway Modelling at Peterborough. We booked a small six foot space, with the sole purpose of going out and meeting with people who have an interest in our railway.

We decided the Information stand we had was not great, and we would need to see if we could better it. Sometime ago, the group bought a second hand information stand which went up very easy and worked on magnets. These where contained in two bulky boxes, which have been stored for sometime. We opened them up and built the frame. Very easy, it looked like a winner. Then we tried to attach the blue backgrounds. Disaster - they where far too big, and just fell off.

The solution - Modify them. Our Vice Chairman spent an afternoon cutting these down to size, and repositioning the magnets on the back. This worked really well and the the stand was erected for the first time at our Wisbech meeting in September 2009.

Now we had this six foot stand, what on earth were we to put on it?

We spent a whole Sunday doing posters, and sorting pictures out to go on the boards. We feel we got the stand right. Once done, it was time to get everything ready for the 2009, National Festival of Railway Modelling.

When we set out to do this show, our aim was not to make lots of money, while that would be nice, it was our aim to get out there and speak with people interested in our cause, from far and wide. We did bring along some Bramley Line merchandise to sell from our range in the gift shop, including the new replica Wisbech East Platform tickets. Over the weekend we spoke to many people, some from Railway Industry, others local to the area, others from a far. We enjoyed talking to everyone who come to our stand, and would like to thank everyone who purchased merchandise.

We hope that we have shown the cause to everyone in a good light, manged to dispand some of the myths which have existed, and it was very good getting to speak to so many supporters. We raised a total of £160 at the event for the cause. We would like to thank Warners Group and Market Deeping Model Railway Club for their hospitality.

Our attention now returns to working on the line and obtaining the rest of the money for getting the lease. Sunday October 25th details to follow.

Moving forward

Despite reports that the weather was to be poor on Sunday, it was actually a very nice day out on the Bramley Line. Work started at 9.30 where we left off two weeks ago in clearing the track heading North towards Coldham. We made Stirling progress with the clearing and some of the photos from the day are shown below.

At the Start of the day, with some clearing having already taken place before the photo was taken looking north towards Coldham.

Bowing down, no really getting to grips with all this grass!. We love grass. Grass stops the weeds growing and is also very easy to clear once the line is up and running.

Elm Road Crossing takes shape

North of the Crossing, a tree has grown in what was once a very empty part of the line. It is intended that Elm Road Station will go here, and therefore, the tree, needed to come down. Below is said tree!

Mid Week Wisbech fun!

This week we had a Mid Week team out on Wednesday. The Mid week team will concentrate on the Wisbech end of the line which until now, has been neglected somewhat, although not by purpose. We met at Weasenham Lane and had a look around there. We decided that the area around Weasenham Lane, although not clear of vegetation, was not a major cause for concern as it is at present.

So, we moved along the line to Wisbech A47 Crossing. We decided the bit from Wisbech A47 Bypass to heading back to Wisbech was in a bad way, and this is where we decided to concentrate our efforts.

We sometimes wonder if we should have been called the Bramble line. We spent four hours hacking away brambles and trees to get the ballast line clear. Some photos from the day are shown below.

Pushing North towards Wisbech at Speed...

This Sunday, the Civil Engineering team were out working on the railway as per usual. We had a good number of volunteers this Sunday, and managed to push further north than we expected. Having done a lot of tree clearing between March Elm Road and Chain Bridge, the section between Chain Bridge and Coldham appears to have very few trees which need dealt with, and very few brambles at the March end, it's all Grass.

This is great news, as the grass is fairly easy to get up and once the lease is obtained, it will go very easily with Weedkiller.

Moving forward, it's a busy week this week on the Bramley Line. Some members of the Civil Engineering Team will be out working to clear vegetation from Weasenham Lane Level Crossing working towards March. Although this is currently happening when people are available, it is the intention to start a Wisbech Mid Week and Weekend Team to work towards March, hopefully meeting up with the March to Wisbech team somewhere in the Waldersea area eventually.

So if your available this Wednesday day time, we are meeting at approx 10.30am at Weasenham Lane Level Crossing.

Also on Wednesday, it's our Wisbech Meeting being held at 19.30 at St Peters Church Hall, Upper Rooms. This is a great way to meet people who are interested in getting the Railway off the ground and finding out how to get involved.

Civil Engineering Sundays

Another Sunday, another Civil Engineering Department day out clearing the railway. Work this week follows on from the teams great effort to clear from March to Wisbech, so far clearing between the Stop Board at Whitemoor Yard through to Chain Bridge. This Sunday, we started at Chain Bridge and made excellent progress north towards Coldham. We welcomed another new volunteer to the group, and a reminder that everyone is welcome to get involved. We're a working on the Railway....

Well, didn't we do well, even if we do say so ourselves. At Midnight last night we launched our brand new website, which better reflects the way in which the group is going, and we feel is much more professional.

Dreamers move aside now and let the Civil Engineers out. The Track Clearing team has become the Civil Engineers department which will be looking after the line once we are up and running. And we were out today, working from the farm occupation crossing north of Elm Road to Chain Bridge. A number of trees later, and you can actually see the whistle board for some distance, which was obscured by trees and brambles. Having cleared the line now from Whitemoor Stop Board through Elm Road Crossing and onto Chain Bridge, the team will be working north of Chain Bridge next week heading towards Coldham.

While we were there, we took some time to work on Chain Bridge today, removing some trees which were growing from underneath the bridge and assessing the work to be done on the Bridge. The Metal spans of the bridge are in good shape, the Wooden beams are also ok. The decking is very rough round the edges, and a good deal of this will need to be replaced. Work on this will take place once the lease has been agreed from Network Rail.

Work in action

Following on from Friday, the group where out clearing the vegetation north of Elm Road Crossing on Sunday. A great deal of trees and bushes were cut away between Elm Road Crossing and the Farmers Private User crossing between Elm Road and Chain Bridge.

As can be seen above, a number of weeds and trees are getting in the way. This is by far the best bit of track, and we are now aiming to keep it this way!

Some jobs for during the week

Following the resurfacing of the road between Coldham and Waldersea, a lot of the equipment being used was stored on the Railway crossing. This led to the old tarmac coming up, and a test of the gate was done, and found that the crossing gates would not close over the road.

Some work later, we got rid of the tarmac coming up and a test of the gate was done, some photos shown below.

Seeing the crossing over the road now, all we would like to see is a nice Green DMU or Steam Loco and some coaches going over, but lets not get carried away to soon! Having returned and locked up the crossing, we tided the area up at the side of the road and then moved on to the Bridge a Waldersea. We cut back a lot of the brambles preventing the gate from closing, and went to work on a Tree which was obscuring the bridge.

From there a walk of the line was done between Whitemoor Yard and Chain Bridge Level Crossing. A Survey of work needing done in this area was undertaken, and counted 6 sleepers which needed replaced, some vegetation which needs cut back towards Chain Bridge.

Sunday we will be working on the section between Elm Road Crossing and Chain Bridge. If you wish to get involved please come along. We start at 9.30am.

Busy few weeks for the Bramley Line

Well, its been a couple weeks since the last update, and that because we have been so busy. We attended at very short notice Fincham Village fete and also a Model Railway Exhibition at Wimbotsham and then a function at Upwell. This was a very busy weekend for us, and we done well promoting our cause, and everyone we spoke to was happy to get behind us and supported our ideas.

You may be able to see, we have been taking delivery of our new merchandise, with our new logo. The second photo shows the old banner which will soon be replaced. We also took deliever of a large amount of Railway Overalls and Hi-Vis jackets, etc, for our team of trackworkers, which has involved a lot of sorting out.

On Saturday, August 22nd, we attended the Needham Market Model Railway Exhibition in Suffolk, some distance from our patch, but we had a lot of interest and sold a number of items. A grand total for all this will appear soon.

Looking forward, the next Meeting will be held in March on Thursday night and all are welcome to attend. A new website is being developed and we are hoping it will be live very soon.

Busy Weekend for the Roadshow...

The 'Roadshow' will be at Fincham Fete on Friday 7th, being held in the Village Hall from 11 - 2.30. Fincham is on the A1122 between Downham Market and Swaffham. This is a Charity Function for people with learning difficulties and/or physical disabilities.

On Saturday 8th, Wimbotsham & Stow Village Hall, Low Road, Wimbotsham, Kings Lynn and just off A10 between Kings Lynn and Downham Market, where Wisbech Model Railway Club have been asked to hold a Mini-Model Railway Exhibition in aid of Village Hall Funds. Ant colony on the move between Elm Road and Whitemoor...

This Sunday, the track clearing carried on where we left off last week. A fair bit was done in the morning by Brain and Kevin moving from Whitemoor towards Elm Road Crossing. The idea is, every week we start at the far south of the line and work our way towards Wisbech. By doing this every week, we can keep on top of the weeds as they begin to grow, then we do not end up having to go over old ground in mass vegetation clearances.

As you can see from last weeks photos, we continue to move towards the overgrown bit further up towards Elm Road.

During the lunch break, our chairman nearly jumped out his skin, when this little fella appeared from out the undergrowth. It is infact a tree stump, cut during an earlier clearance, which looks like a turtles head from the right angle. We did suggest maybe he should have gone to specsavers...

Then our vice chairman and Derek decided to upset a number of ant conolnies which had set up home under the grass and weeds along the line from Elm Road towards where the others are working.

When we said we would start at Whitmoor and work towards Wisbech, the Chairman took off to Wisbech down the line! We are actually moving back to the Crossing to do a quick job there.

A quick check to see how the fence is, and putting up a poster on the fence to let people know the crossing was improved by volunteer members of the Bramley Line.

Back to the Weeding....

On Sunday, members of the Bramley Line where back out again and have returned to the weeding. Work was carried out near Whitemoor and the group are now working to a new improved method, which we hope will mean the line will remain clear throughout once we reach Wisbech.

This area has already been cleared. Its amazing how fast it grows back!

This gives an idea of how we propose to keep on top. We will clear the entire line, stating at this point every time along the Ballast line and move forward with each week. It is hoped by starting here each week and moving forward, we will keep on top of the weeds as the build up.
